Summer is my favorite season, and I am ready for longer days, warmer weather and finding time to spend at the beach. Although, summer doesn’t eliminate the stresses we navigate each day, it does provide additional time to engage with a powerful source of healing and renewal.

There is scientific evidence to suggest that spending time by the ocean may have healing properties, for both physical and mental health.

If your location allows, take a trip to the beach, and experience one or more of the benefits below:

Boosted mood: Exposure to natural environments, like the beach, has been shown to improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. A study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology found that people who walked on the beach experienced greater feelings of well-being compared to those who walked in an urban environment.

Enhanced physical health: The salt water and minerals in seawater can help to improve skin health, while swimming and water activities provide low-impact exercise for people with joint pain or mobility issues.

Improved sleep: A study published in the journal of Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being found that people who spent time in nature reported better sleep quality and felt more refreshed in the morning.

Next time you are near the ocean, remember to:

Smell the salt air: Salt air is rich in negative ions, which have been shown to promote feelings of well-being and reduce stress.

Touch the sand and water: The texture of the sand and the temperature of the water can be grounding. Walk barefoot on the sand, or walk into the water, to connect you with the present moment.

Listen to the sounds: The rhythmic sound of the waves can be meditative, promoting relaxation and mindfulness. Listening to the sounds can also help quiet the mind and reduce anxiety.

Look around: Gazing out at the big blue sea can be inspiring and calming. Taking in the scenery may help to shift your perspective and bring a sense of well-being.
